I never imagined this would be one of the first entries to my blog. I had rehearsed various openings all of which focused on the beauty and captivating aroma of our favourite oils and the pleasure they provide. But the changes set before us, are shining a searchlight on what truly matters at this point in time. Our resilience, creativity and kindness are all being summoned.

We are being provided with the opportunity to refresh and reset. Now’s the chance to break with old habits that no longer serve us, treat long-term nagging aches and pains, engage in learning something new or simply make detox part of a weekly routine.

Even in small ways essential oil use can have a big impact on everything from our mood to our health. When inhaled, essential oil particles travel directly to the brain. When applied to the skin in base oil, they travel through dermal layers and into the blood stream.  Their impact can be quite profound. A Scented Life unpacks some of these for you.

 

Here are 4 ways with essential oils

 

Create a roll-on to wear as a natural perfume to boost confidence levels

Roll-ons provide simple, convenient application of essential oils when in need of some comfort. During this time, many of us are having to carry the load at home from tutoring children, to encouraging partners and entertaining pets. Take a moment to create a grounding and stabilising roll on to apply throughout the day. This simple blend smells beautiful and is also balancing to the nervous system.

Combine 6 drops of sandalwood in 1 tablespoon of jojoba and add to a roller bottle. Add a few drops of neroli if you have on hand, otherwise geranium will do nicely. Rub onto wrists, behind the ears and the back of the neck to help ground you. It’s a lovely, subtle way to wear scent, especially when you are working from home in your track suit. Once you are guided through the blending chapter in A Scented Life, you will feel empowered to design your own natural mood scents in place of the usual fragrance you wear.

Apply essential oils to your body as moisturiser

The Daily Body Rub is an age-old practice, first introduced in Australia in the 90s by the original founders of In Essence Aromatherapy. Back then it was called ‘aromatic dressing’. The idea was to dress from the ‘inside out’ depending on how you wanted to feel each day, using essential oils. I have been delighting in this practice – no doubt in the company of thousands of other women who attended those same inspiring, life-changing, weekend workshops, back then!

My favourite blend from A Scented Life during this time of loss and irrevocable change is, Inspire intimacy with jasmine absolute, sweet orange, patchouli and ylang ylang. Simply add between 6-9 drops of mixed oils to 1 tablespoon of jojoba or coconut and apply to the skin, as you would a moisturiser, preferably while still dewy after bathing. This way you can exude your mood as well as nourish your skin.

Breathe in beauty

Just as fresh flowers can boost your mood and add a touch of beauty to the home, so too can diffusing your favourite scent improve your mindset and increase vitality. It will get you in touch with nature especially when you are working on overdrive and feel listless and bored. Choose from a wide range of ‘two oil’ recipes if you are new to aromatherapy in the, Reference chart or over 40 complex blends, intended for the advocate in the, Inhale chart.

Diffusing essential oils in this way will provide all the benefits aromatherapy has to offer. One of my favourites:

Add 2 drops each of Bergamot, Lime, Grapefruit and Tangerine plus 1 drop of cedarwood to the water in your diffuser. Diffuse for 3 hours in open plan areas of your home.

Reawaken your skin

Prepare a body scrub for the ultimate shower experience. Your skin will feel renewed, cleansed, nourished and your mind will be refreshed, ready to start over. Add 2 drops each of frankincense, grapefruit, lemon and spearmint to 2 tablespoons of jojoba before adding to a cup of pink Himalayan salt before stepping into the shower. Apply generously to limbs. Wash off and pat dry.
